For one reason or another, crossover artists are often met with skepticism or dismissal. Maybe it’s because we find it hard to believe celebrities can excel in varying pursuits while most of us barely find one calling. We treat Madonna no differently. After dominating the music scene for a couple decades, she tried her hand at film — first as an actress (Evita, Swept Away), and then as a director. Her debut behind-the-camera (Filth and Wisdom) received negative reviews across the board, but Madonna has never been one to give in to her critics. Three years later, she’s set to release her second film titled W.E. Set in the 1930s and the 1990s, the film tells the story of two women in parallel forbidden love stories. Already premiering in Europe, the film has already been met with mixed reviews (yes, Madonna was booed at the London premiere). But despite the negative press, Harvey Weinstein was impressed enough to purchase the film and could make a big push for the film in Costume Design. If you’re on the fence, here’s the newest trailer released today for W.E.

W.E. opens in select U.S. cities on December 9.
