NOMINEES:
  • Jeff Cronenwerth (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo)
  • Emmanuel Lubezki (The Tree of Life)
  • Robert Richardon (Hugo)
  • Guilliaume Schiffman (The Artist)
  • Hoyt van Hoytema (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)

WHAT WE LEARNED:

  • The Artist is still undoubtedly the front-runner in the Oscar race
  • War Horse is pretty much dead in the water
  • Don’t take too much stock in Tinker Tailor nomination. It’s a critical favorite and not sure it will translate (in the Best Picture field)
  • Hugo is still in the top contender, though a true underdog in the Oscar race
  • The Tree of Life has the greatest cinematography in the last several years, and I’m glad everyone else realizes that
  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is pulling a late surge in the Academy race, which is surprising for all the Oscar predictors. But watch out, this could take a bunch of nominations come a few weeks.
