It’s a little bit of a shame, but I guess this makes sense. After Christian Bale is done with The Dark Knight Rises, he was supposed to exchange the black tights for a gray beard in Darren Aronofsky’s (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan) biblical epic Noah. Aronofsky had tried working with Bale before when he was originally at the helm for The Fighter. But now, another opportunity has passed.  The reason? Bale will work with acclaimed director Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line) in back-to-back films Lawless and Knight of Cups. It seems these days that if an actor has to choose between any director, Malick always wins out.

Here’s the next round table of Oscar hopefuls from The Hollywood Reporter. Included in this discussion are Alexander Payne (The Descendants), Mike Mills (Beginners), Steve McQueen (Shame), Jason Reitman (Young Adult), Bennett Miller (Moneyball), and Michael Hazanavicius (The Artist). Once again, don’t be surprised if a few of the actual nominees and the winning director isn’t from this list. Some favorites to win the award include Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris), Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life), David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Steve Spielberg (War Horse), Martin Scorsese (Hugo), Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close), and Tate Taylor (The Help). It’s a wide open race this year, but at this juncture, I would probably place my vote in for Hazanavicius, Malick, or Spielberg.
